Off-The-Record encryption is a great idea. If you'd like to use it with Linux, you can find it available as a plugin for Pidgin and is built into Adium on MacOS.
I originally took the idea from Rod Begbie, and published keys for my IM accounts. Nowadays, the list of accounts that both I use and are supported by these tools shrunk almost out of existence.
